A boat rarely runs on a single network. Coming from different manufacturers, engines and controllers often run on CAN/J1939, while displays and navigation gear are on NMEA 2000. The MRS NMEA 2000 Gateway bridges this gap. It brings the data from different systems to NMEA 2000 network and passes it in both directions.
It isn’t built around one fixed function. You set it up for the data your application needs, whether that’s J1939 messages from an engine or CAN signal from your own controller. Boat builders, marine OEMs and system integrators use it to get existing equipment talking to an NMEA 2000 network without redesigning the system around the gateway. Once it’s running, your MFD, chartplotter and other devices on the boat network can see the information they need.
Optional LIN or I/O connectivity offer further flexibility for system architecture.
In short: you design the communication around your application, not the other way round.

You can configure the gateway for integration with a wide range of onboard systems and devices, including:
The exact data and communication requirements are defined per project. That works for connecting existing equipment to an NMEA 2000 network as well as for developing a new OEM system where CAN/J1939 and NMEA 2000 have to work side by side.
1. Connect your system. Connect the gateway to a supported data source, such as an engine or OEM controller, pump controller, tank monitoring system, battery management system or custom device.
2. Configure the communication. The gateway is highly programmable with MRS Applics Studio (graphical programming or C code) managed by MRS or fully in your hands.
Program the gateway for reliable transfer of CAN/J1939 data to and from the required NMEA 2000 network.
3. Exchange data over the NMEA 2000 network. The data becomes available to compatible MFDs, navigation systems or other connected equipment.
4. Tailor the configuration to your OEM application. The configuration can follow your system architecture and series-production requirements.
What is an NMEA 2000 Gateway module?
It is a compact ECU that lets systems using different protocols share data with an NMEA 2000 network. Depending on the configuration, it translates relevant data between CAN-based systems, SAE J1939 and NMEA 2000, allowing compatible devices to exchange the required data.
Does data flow in both directions?
Yes. Communication between CAN/J1939 and NMEA 2000 works both ways and can be configured to match your application requirements.
Does the gateway support LIN and I/O?
Yes. Depending on the hardware variant. The Micro Gateway 32-bit has two LIN and two I/Os, and the MicroPlex Gateway 3CAN LIN has one LIN.
Can I use it in OEM and series production projects?
Yes. The NMES 2000 Gateway is configured for each application and can be configured to meet OEM requirements. Weather for series production or custom marine installations, we ensure a seamless setup.
